Casting for Coasters is an original fly fishing painting. I painted this en plein air on the “North Shore” of Lake Superior in Minnesota–where the Temperance River flows into Lake Superior. One of the joys of plein air is chatting with the locals. I learn all kinds of new and interesting factoids about a place. On this occasion, the local fishermen told me about a fish distinctive to the area. “Coasters” are a type of Brook Trout that live in Lake Superior and migrate up the tributary rivers when they reproduce (just like salmon do). The fishermen said that the water level was lower than normal, so more rocks were showing. Nonetheless, he was committed to “Casting for Coasters”. I painted this in the fall of 2021.
