Sokup’s is a painting of Sokup’s meat mark and grocery in my hometown of Chippewa Falls, WI. My mom still shops here for meat as she did when I was a kid. The store hasn’t changed much from the way I remember it. I was drawn to this scene because it embodies the small-town shops owned and run by local, hard-working, enterprising citizens. Not only can you pick up your meat and veggies in this small store, but also some friendly smiles, chatter, and local news. I intentionally emphasized the sepia tones in this scene to make it feel even more old-fashioned. However, this is how Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin looked in fall 2021. I love how my hometown has been able to hold onto its roots.
