2026 Workshops Offered

Stay tuned for workshops coming up in 2026.

Naomi is teaching a Foundations of Acrylic class through the Phipps Center for the Arts in Hudson, WI Jan 27 – Mar 3, 2026.

Plein Air Workshop

Outdoor Painting on Location

This is a two-day workshop. Each day starts with a demonstration/ Q&A in the morning. After lunch, each artist-learner will paint independently with individualized guidance from me. The location of the workshop is ideal for a plein air class--it will be held on a private family farm, so no public distractions to contend with while you are first starting out. There are so many subjects to paint--flowers, an old barn, cows, fruit trees, and the Kinnickinnic River runs through the property!

Stay Tuned for Time and Location

9 am - 4 pm each day (with one hour lunch break)
Cost: $240, bring your own plein air setup. If you need to rent an easel/setup, check with Naomi for availability and rental fee.
Bring your own lunch. No restaurants nearby.
Minimum 4, maximum 10 participants.

Prior Painting Experience Recommended

Plein air painting is the "Extreme Sports" equivalent of painting. You will want to have some comfort level of painting before trying it outside.

Teaching Philosophy

The goal in all of my workshops is to give you the foundational principles upon which to build your own style.

My workshops are meant to teach concepts so that you can go on to capture whatever sparks your interest.  They are not setup like the popular “Paint-and-Sip” classes, which means that you will not walk away with a painting ready to hang on your wall.  Instead, my goal is that you leave with a solid base of understanding and tools so that you can have the knowledge to paint subjects that you love with confidence — in your own style.

I am a pathologically curious person and a lifelong learner.  I love to geek out about art!  Teaching gives me an outlet for all of the cool and interesting things I’ve learned and am excited about and want to share with others.

My workshops are intended for adult learners.  However, I taught elementary and middle school art for five years, so I know how to break-down complex concepts into easy-to-understand steps.  If a self-motivated, art-loving young teenager wants to join the group, I’m sure they will be able to keep up and find value in what is taught.

“Life Happens” Refund Policy:

Testimonials

Last weekend I enjoyed another wonderful painting workshop with Naomi. We painted at a beautiful farm with the Kinnickinnic River as our subject (oh the choices! Cows, sheep, gardens, etc.) I learn so much from Naomi! Not only techniques and color theory, but how to enjoy the process. It certainly is serious work made enjoyable. I like how Naomi demonstrates for a few hours, then students get their chance to paint with as much guidance and input from her as they need/want.

I thoroughly enjoyed and was impressed with the plein air workshop that Naomi led for two days over the weekend in Wisconsin.  The amount of knowledge, skill and insight on how to paint in oil was so detailed and informative.  Naomi made the experience very hands on and our setting at a farm on the edge of a river the entire weekend was beautiful! -Kate
